Insta360 GO 3S Review – A Tiny Camera With Big Creative Potential

The Insta360 GO 3S is one of the smallest action cameras currently available, but its capabilities go far beyond its size. Designed as a wearable POV camera, the GO 3S focuses on convenience, flexibility, and creative shooting modes.

After using it in several real-world scenarios, from POV driving shots during an autocross session to fitness workouts and even swimming, it quickly became clear that this tiny camera has a lot to offer, but it also comes with a few compromises.

Ultra-Compact Design That Works Anywhere

One of the most impressive aspects of the GO 3S is its tiny form factor.

Because the camera is so small, it can be mounted in places where traditional action cameras simply wouldn’t fit. The magnetic mounting system makes attaching the camera incredibly easy. In my case, it worked perfectly for POV driving footage during an autocross session with the Honda S2000, allowing me to quickly mount the camera and capture immersive driver-eye perspectives.

The lightweight design also makes it ideal for daily activities and workouts. During exercises like planks and squats, the camera could easily be positioned to review my form afterward.

This versatility is where the GO 3S really shines, it can move seamlessly between content creation, sports, fitness, and everyday moments.

FreeFrame Mode: Shoot Once, Choose Later

One of the standout features of the GO 3S is FreeFrame Mode.

This mode records using the entire sensor, allowing you to reframe the footage later in the Insta360 app.

That means you can shoot once and later decide whether the video should be:

• 16:9 (horizontal) for YouTube

• 9:16 (vertical) for Instagram Reels or TikTok

For creators who publish on multiple platforms, this is a huge advantage. Instead of filming separate clips for each format, the GO 3S allows you to capture everything in one go and crop later during editing.

Stabilization Trade-Offs

While FreeFrame Mode offers creative flexibility, it does come with a small compromise.

The camera’s best stabilization performance happens in the standard recording modes, where the camera crops into the frame to apply digital stabilization.

When shooting in FreeFrame mode, stabilization isn’t quite as strong because the camera is preserving the full sensor for reframing later.

This means you may need to choose between maximum stabilization or maximum flexibility, depending on the situation.

Waterproof and Ready for Adventure

Another feature that proved useful was the camera’s waterproof design.

I used the GO 3S while swimming and diving, and it handled the environment without any issues. Not having to worry about water damage adds a lot of confidence when filming around water or in unpredictable weather conditions.

As expected, audio quality underwater is very limited, but this is common with almost any waterproof camera and not really a dealbreaker.

Storage Limitations

The unit I tested was the 128GB version, which initially felt like plenty of space.

However, once the storage filled up, I quickly realized one of the biggest limitations of the GO 3S: there is no expandable storage.

Unlike many action cameras, the GO 3S does not support microSD cards or external SSD recording, meaning once the internal storage is full, you’ll need to offload footage before continuing.

For creators who shoot frequently, this can become a workflow inconvenience.

Low-Light Performance

Because of the camera’s very small sensor, low-light performance is not its strongest area.

In well-lit environments daylight, gyms, or outdoor activities, the footage looks great. But in darker conditions, image quality drops noticeably compared to larger action cameras.

That said, this trade-off is expected given the camera’s extremely compact size.

The Insta360 GO 3S is not trying to replace traditional action cameras. Instead, it offers something different: a tiny, wearable camera designed for moments where larger cameras would be impractical.
